Claire Somaglino will give a seminar about the toponymy of P. Wilbour in Johannes Gutenberg Universität, Mainz, on the 18th of June.
Abstract : The sources that can be used to analyse the place names of the Egyptian countryside are scarce and fragmentary for the Pharaonic period, but for a document unique in many respects, Papyrus Wilbour, dated to the reign of Ramesse V (XXth dynasty). This fiscal register gives an insight into the toponymy and microtoponymy of a section of countryside in Middle Egypt during the Ramesside period, which in turn leads us into the Egyptian perception of space and landscape. This papyrus therefore gives us the means to attempt a synchronic study of a toponymic system as well as to analyse the process of placenaming in Ancient Egypt.
